14 campgrounds reopening in Northern California

Anxious to hit the road and camp somewhere other than your own backyard or living room pillow fort?  Campgrounds and cabins are beginning to reopen across Northern California. Here’s a sampling to get you started.

Auburn State Recreation Area: Mineral Bar, Ruck-a-Chucky and Lake Clementine Boat-in Campgrounds are open on a first come-first served basis, with the exception of certain sites that are closed. AutoCamp Yosemite: Featuring 80 deluxe Airstream trailers, 15 luxury tents and three cabins near Yosemite National Park, with private patios and campfires at all campsites. 6323 CA-140, Midpines. Big Basin Redwoods State Park: This Santa Cruz State Park offers a variety of campsites, including 142 standard campsites, four group campgrounds, 35 tent cabins and a horse camp that allows riders and their horses overnight accommodations. 21600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29761

Butano State Park: This park, which features 40 miles of hiking trails that wind through 4,000+ acres of canyons and uplands, provides 21 drive-in campsites, 18 walk-in campsites and a backcountry trail camp with eight campsites. 500 Cloverdale Road, Pescadero. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=536 

Calaveras Big Trees Group Campground: The park houses two main campgrounds with a total of 129 campsites. Cbtsp Fire Road, Arnold. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=551

Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area: A fun, challenging and scenic place to ride with a motocross track, ATV track, riding trails and more. All camping is first-come, first-served. 8600 Corral Hollow Road, Tracy. http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1172

Casini Ranch Family Campground: This family friendly, pet friendly, nature-filled campground in the Russian River Valley is now open and taking reservations. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, large group sites and playgrounds are closed, and no onsite activities are planned. https://casiniranch.com/

Clear Lake State Park: The park, which is located on the shores of one of California’s largest freshwater lakes, offers 149 developed campsites spread across four campground areas. 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=473

Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park: Campers can explore the remote 8-mile strip of coastline. Group campsites remain closed, but regular campsites are open. 1111 Second St., Crescent City. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=414

D.L. Bliss: Visitors can enjoy swimming, scuba diving, hiking, boating and more at this Lake Tahoe park. There are no hook-ups or group campsites, but there are showers and a dump station. Donner Memorial State Park: Offering camping, picnicking, boating, fishing, water-skiing and hiking. Open for existing reservations and limited walk-ins. 12593 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=503

Fernwood Resort, Big Sur: The compound includes a motel, forest cabins, tent cabins, adventure tents, camping and RV camping. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Fernwood Resort share a border and you can easily hike into the park from the campground. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area: Beals Point Campground is open at limited capacity to maintain social distancing. Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area: Featuring 6,800 acres of scenic and varied terrain, Hollister Hills offers numerous off-highway vehicle opportunities as well as hiking, bicycling and equestrian trails. 7800 Cienega Road, Hollister. http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1179

Mendocino Grove: Offering 60 fully-outfitted platform tents in 37 wooded acres in Mendocino County. Each site includes a fire pit with grill and picnic table.
