Sales of U.S. vacation homes rose twice as fast as other homes last year -study

(Reuters) -The U.S. housing market bounced back quickly last year after the pandemic gave some workers the flexibility to work from anywhere – and demand for vacation homes was especially hot, according to a report released on Tuesday by the National Association of Realtors.

Sales of existing homes in counties with a higher share of vacation homes rose by 24% on average in 2020, more than double the 11% increase in counties that don’t have a high concentration of vacation homes.

Home prices also appreciated more quickly in vacation home counties, gaining an average 14% last year,

Water discharge event starts at popular tourist spot Kurobe Dam

Kurobe Dam, a popular tourist destination in the central Japan prefecture of Toyama, began its annual discharge of water on Friday.

The hydroelectric dam, located in Japan’s Northern Alps, releases 10 to 15 tons of water a second through gates in the middle of its 186-meter dam wall, the tallest in Japan, creating a spectacular arc that can be viewed from a designated observatory area.

Kansai Electric Power Co., the operator of the dam, said the water discharge began in 1961 to maintain the landscape of the nearby Kurobe River during summer when the water level typically drops.
