Some hotels, rentals bend California COVID-19 travel rules

Confused about whether it’s OK to stay in a hotel or vacation rental under California’s stricter stay-home rules? You aren’t alone.

Our unscientific survey of more than 50 hotels, motels and other lodgings showed widely mixed results, with the order garnering stronger allegiance in Northern California, weaker in Southern California.

The governor’s Dec. 3 order said lodgings in high-COVID areas of the state are open only to “essential workers” or people who must quarantine, not to vacationers. Still, many lodgings are leaving travelers to make their own decisions. And many travelers continue to scratch their heads or look for loopholes.

Israel to set up ‘tourism islands’ in desert where hotels and attractions can reopen

Israel is setting up so-called tourism islands in the desert resort town of Eilat, where hotels and some attractions will reopen and visitors will be required to take regular Covid-19 tests.

The plans were approved by the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on Wednesday and are part of the government’s efforts to slowly and carefully scale back a second nationwide lockdown imposed in September.

Under the proposals, holiday makers must pass a coronavirus test 72 hours before arriving and must then take subsequent tests each week.

The measures will only apply to the remote town of Eilat and the Dead Sea

Hotels and airlines are suffering in the outbreak, but many RV parks and campgrounds are busy

As shutdowns, cutbacks and other coronavirus-related troubles led legions of Americans to stay away from hotels and airports, numbers increased at many public and private California campgrounds, their operators said.

“We’ve actually had record bookings the last couple of days,” said Nick Devane, founder and chief executive of Texino, a company that rents and customizes camping vans. The company, based in the L.A. neighborhood of Silver Lake, opened in late 2018.

“I think people want to avoid airports and they want to get away from cities, and camping is a way to do both,” Devane said.
